Table Mountain Rights is a community-based initiative seeking the formal recognition of the Table Mountain range - including its vibrant associated ecosystems, as a living being with inherent rights. This majestic mountain is more than just an iconic landmark - it is a vital, interconnected community that sustains life. We believe Table Mountain has the right to exist, thrive, and be safeguarded from harm, and should have a voice in decisions that affect its wellbeing.
This iconic and sacred mountain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site within one of the most biologically diverse regions on Earth - and the source of many life-sustaining streams and aquifers. Listed as one of the world’s natural wonders, Table Mountain forms the heart of the Cape Floral Region and is steeped in cultural, spiritual, geological, and ecological significance.
Scientists warn that if we do not take decisive measures now, we risk triggering an unstoppable chain of consequences. We urgently need to adopt and implement a system that recognizes humanity’s responsibility to safeguard this fragile community of life and ensure that decisions are made in the best interests of Table Mountain.
